I'd recommend starting with A Scandal in Bohemia. But it might endear him more to the good Mr. Holmes if you pick one where the detective comes out ahead in the end. A Study in Scarlet would be the logical choice, but not if you want him to have enough clues in the narrative to solve the mystery himself. The Copper Beeches, possibly.

Well, yes, I agree. But personally, I'm happy just being able to function with fear. I don't think I could master it entirely. [Because that's his idea of mastering it--knowing it so well that you don't seem to even feel it anymore, like Hotch or Emily or Morgan. Then again, while he'd never realize it himself, he's developed an impressive ability to grit his teeth and trudge through fear over the last few years. There was once a time when overwhelming fear could make him cry; now he just hits it in the face with a pipe.]

I'll keep all that in mind. I'll probably talk to his parents before I choose and make sure they're comfortable with him reading whatever I'm thinking of. They can be a little careful about what they expose him to sometimes, since they're both in law enforcement. [Protect the child's innocence as long as possible, and protect him from the darkness you see every day. Reid can understand that.]

His mother, JJ, has been my teammate for eight years. His father, Will, used to be in the New Orleans police department, but then he moved to DC to live with JJ and Henry, so he currently works in the local police department. You'd probably like him, actually. He's a detective.

I do have more criteria for likeability than just "a detective", you know.

That's because you were neither dumb as a sack of bricks nor willing to just up and embrace this damn place and all the implausible mumbo-jumbo everybody was trying to spoon-feed you about it.
