It's funny because with Yagyuu, I actually did a deliberate avoidance of the traditional starter/trainer thing — Yagyuu's largely indifferent to his starter and deliberately fosters an inferiority complex in it so it'll fight better trying to win his love. His favorite, which is his Espeon, is actually the second Pokemon he ever had. B)
