He's a very heavy work in progress, let's say.

He's not a bad person, even though he's built up a lot of detestable traits and habits about him, he's just a deeply wounded person and he needs to be shown that the world isn't such a bad place and not everyone is going to treat him badly. Being taken out of the environment Crocker is from is helpful, at least, she's starting to see the change a little, he did specifically set out to warn her so she doesn't get hurt in the bombing. Perhaps with some more luck on his side (and friends!) his heart can grow a little more.
