Maybe for the Arcanine to get him lost in the forest or in a cave somewhere as a playful gesture, but to be brought back to a familiar town? That was honestly the last thing on his mind.

Then again, so was spotting a very familiar uniform on the last person he thought he'd see again. To Bert, their last interaction was... less than pleasant.
