I feel bad for Pitch. Does that count?

Ahaha, um... That's actually kind of complicated, because the simple answer is definitely NO, nope, not even a little bit, he deserved it, nope.

Buuuuuuuuuuut nothing is ever black-and-white, so of course the simple answer isn't really a proper answer.

Does he feel sorry for Pitch, specifically, the guy that tried to kill Sandy AND Baby Tooth? No. That ship sailed about the time Pitch did that whole 'cold and dark' speech in Antarctica. Jack's worldview is very much 'we protect the kids = good, he tries to hurt the kids = bad.' While Jack totally understands the necessity of fear a heck of a lot better than the other Guardians (and why does it always feel strange to try to swear when I'm using Jack's journal?) because fun can be really scary sometimes (think of roller coasters or haunted houses or really awesome sled rides), Pitch took it too far and his fear was hurting people. So Pitch needed to be gone and ten minutes ago, at that.

But. Together with the 'fear is necessary' stuff, Jack also knows pretty darn well what it feels like to be forgotten. Getting walked through is not on his top ten list of ways to spend an afternoon. That, poetically enough, he wouldn't wish on his worst enemy, even if that enemy is Pitch. So while he knows it's the only way to keep the kids safe, it still doesn't quite sit right with him.

So yes, short answer, NO! Longer, more tl;dr answer, he doesn't feel bad FOR Pitch, but he does feel a bit bad.

I did too, I don't think that was handled very effectively in the movie. Storytelling, etc, I digress....

I love this answer! I feel like it didn't get touched on enough in the movie that Jack was being drawn as a parallel to Pitch, and this really fleshes out that pseudo-relationship.

What, making the villain completely sympathetic in the last like fifteen minutes of the film?

They really are very similar. In an ideal world, fun and fear would probably work pretty closely together. Totally keep each other in check and such. But then Jack followed his purpose in spite of the lack of belief, and Pitch fought against the lack of belief in spite of his purpose. Fun times were not had by all.

Would he have tried to reason with Pitch or explain to the Guardians that "Hey you guys are kind of dicks and aren't exactly right either." had there been a choice of it?

Hm... that's a good question. I don't know as I've ever considered such a possibility, considering the movie is basically set up to make it completely impossible. I mean, he meets the guy while he's destroying Tooth's palace and kidnapping the teensy teeths. And it all (*snicker*) snowballed from there.

But I could think of situations in which he would have. I mean, Jack point-blank tells the others that they've forgotten about what kids really ARE. They've forgotten what makes them strong. Pitch rather obviously hasn't. Granted, he's using it for the power of evil instead of good, but if Jack's willing to be all 'okay, no, LISTEN' over something that is basically an attack to their very Centers, then yeah, had he been given a reason, he very well might had stood up for Pitch.

But Pitch didn't want to JUST do his job, he didn't want to JUST be fear together with hope and wonder and fun, etc. He wanted it all, just him. That, Jack wouldn't have gotten behind, even if Pitch had stood by the Antarctica deal and let him stick around, too. Jack understands that no single Guardian could stand alone. Just hope or just fun or just fear wouldn't cut it. So he'd have needed to know Pitch before he went all power-monger villain to do that. Meeting him mid-villainy just didn't leave any room for it.

If any of that makes sense. XD Like I said, I hadn't considered it before, so that's a lot of me just typing-out-loud.

I'm of the mind that Pitch... wasn't in his right mind really and it really was one of those "once you start you just can't stop or change course" sorts of plans.

He's never going to be good, that's not something he's capable of.

WELL Jack and all the others will get a chance to see him up close and personal.

XD For Jack, it is. There's a big difference between evil and not-entirely-good. Jack himself often drifts into that latter category, cause, I mean, look what he spends his spare time doing, trying to break into places and ruining spring holidays with late snowstorms. XD Boy's no saint. (icon appropriate)

Yeah, it sorta comes across that way. I mean, he's obviously been building up to having the Nightmares for some time, which is obviously his answer to Sandy being able to whomp him but good. But really, if anyone was going to recognize that, it'd be the other Guardians, not Jack. He's never even met the guy, or heard much about him, judging by his reactions. (Which... in a way, that seems even sadder, now I'm thinking about it. The other Guardians have never MET Jack, 'cept for Bunny, and vice versa, but they've all heard of each other at least by reputation... or teeth, as the case may be. But not Pitch. Where has he been holing himself up to be 300 years out of the loop?)
