Given that he was apparently attending a really, really upscale school previously despite his family being hideously in debt, logically it follows that someone else had to have been paying for that somehow - so it was something along the lines of "He's only gotten as far as he has by taking advantage of the charity of others." Which, yeah, is kind of a massive shot to the pride and generally a low blow because of how much emphasis he places on the merit of hard work and effort and working for everything you receive, but at the same time it's not something that he'd keep a secret if asked about it. Or if...not asked about it, given that he sort of busts that out in Naegi's direction unprompted during his third free-time event anyway.

Basically, it's not something he's proud of but he's generally of the mindset that it is what it is and there's no sense in hiding it, especially if it comes down to "either say something about this or risk people killing each other tonight."
