You put your head in your canon and what do you get?

✭ A HEADCANON/QUESTIONS MEME ✭
Which is better than "another day older and deeper in debt".

→ Post with a list of your characters.
→ Comment to other people asking them questions about their lineup. Ask anything you can think of: questions about personal headcanon, thoughts on your CR, hypothetical situations, off-screen interactions, future plans, serious business, random crack, whatever!
→ Respond to the questions you receive!
→ LEARN NEW THINGS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S CHARACTERS THAT YOU NEVER KNEW BEFORE.
→ Discover things your characters have in common and forge excellent CR and shenanigans accordingly.
→ Repeat steps 2-5 forever.

Ask anything! I have lots of headcanon for Tenten, I just tend to minimize its exposure in-game. Current/future/prospective CR questions are also great! Let me tl;dr about our CR!

ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO OPEN THIS BOX. ARE YOU SURE. BECAUSE EVEN I DON'T KNOW HOW DEEP THIS RABBIT HOLE GOES apparently it opens into lots of mixed metaphors though.

ALRIGHT LET'S BEGIN with a disclaimer that Tenten is one of the few members of the Konoha 12 who doesn't have an ON-SCREEN FAMILY. EVEN IN FILLER. EVEN IN ROAD TO NINJA WHERE THE WHOLE POINT OF THE OPENING SCENE WAS WAH WAH EVERYONE HAS PARENTS TO RECOMMEND THEM FOR JOUNIN EXCEPT THE NAR. (The other one whose parents we never see is Rock Lee are we seeing a pattern here with my team.) Literally every other one of the Konoha kids, we've seen that their parents EXIST (OR HAVE EXISTED IN THE PAST). We've got nothing on Tenten or Lee, which is a little odd, because as I've said multiple times already, that's not the case with any of the others. But because this literally does not exist on screen, there's no real hard evidence for one theory or another. Which is why I tend to keep it out of games.

BUT LET'S BEGIN I have two main headcanons that I use for Tenten's home life, which have their own branches, etc, depending on the approach I'm taking for a particular psl/au (since I intentionally keep it out of games). One is that she has no family, the other is that her family is foreign-born. Either way, they're absent from the village.

I'm going to talk about my primary one, which is that she's foreign-born. She has a very distinct character design, different from anyone else in the village. Her databook flat-out describes her as being "very Chinese" (her favorite food is Chinese food, though what that means in the context of a world that doesn't have China we just don't know). Her name is more unique as well -- she's the only one of the Konoha 12 who doesn't have a last name (Sai doesn't count here because even Sai isn't his real name, and we know he's an orphan without a name already). While there are people in Konoha who don't have last names (or have them and don't use them), the fact remains that Tenten's the only kid in their generation who doesn't. Which is pretty odd. Team Gai is pretty odd.

But the reason why I don't tend to think of her as being an orphan is because how the fuck does she afford all that weaponry when she's 13. I'm sure she could have saved up her entire life, but she didn't start really working weaponry until after she started working with summoning, which was after she joined Team Gai. This shot of her room shows that she has lots of weapons on display, a vase full of spears, and enough things to suggest that she's somehow able to afford keeping such a nice place at such a young age. We know from Nardo's childhood that the stipend the orphans get isn't all that much. So it stands to reason that Tenten's receiving financial support from somewhere.

The fact that her parents are literally never seen on screen, even in the group shots where everyone's parents are shown, is what really makes me think her parents are just not in the village at all. I think they're probably from another country, a smaller one, where they're well-enough-off to give their daughter some support, but aware that she's never going to reach her potential. So send her to the ninja village. At the risk of this taking a very dark, unintended turn, I'm certain her parents got something for that, but I'd like to think it got put toward funding her ninja training. Buying her equipment, paying her rent, etc.

She's very outgoing, but even in her own personal filler episode, we never see her really having friends at a young age. She's driven to "become Tsunade-sama;" where all the other girls, we've seen in their flashbacks that they've at least interacted with other children (usually over boys but that's an entirely different issue). Her first actual friends that she spends time with are her little misfit teammates. The other kids made friends thanks to their clans or their family connections, but Tenten made friends with this hot-blooded loser (WHO ALSO DOESN'T HAVE AN ON-SCREEN FAMILY) and this little prick whose PARENTS ARE DEAD. And she's able to connect with them without the same kind of awkwardness we see with Sakura to Nardo and Sasook. Because they're similar enough in background that it doesn't jar.

THIS IS ALL JUSTIFICATION FOR MY HEADCANON ON TENTEN'S FAMILY AND YOU ASKED FOR HOME LIFE so let me answer that uh. Tenten's home life is pretty quiet! She uses her time to herself to relax, practice some lighter training. Considering I assume she grew up mostly on her own, she's self-sufficient in cooking/cleaning/etc. Part of why she's so outgoing in part 2 is because she finally does have more friends. And she spends time with them as often as possible, planning outings and excursions to be inclusive. So she was probably pretty lonely as a kid, trying to make friends, but her intensity probably scared them off. Considering that she's the only girl who hasn't been shown to be completely fixated on boys in this series, she probably alienated a lot of the other girls by belittling that. Jeez, who has time for boys when you could be TRAINING TO BECOME A LEGENDARY KUNOICHI??? Which I think also comes from a need to prove herself to some absent family figure, whether it's to prove she's good enough, or just to gain some kind of recognition from them.

Does. Does this answer your question.
