Uh, yeah. Yeah, it is. An Ide of Orunmila. It's, um--I mean, traditionally, only Babalawos, who are the 'priests' of Orula in the Palo and Yoruba traditions, will have one, but I met one during a case and he decided that I needed it more than he did.
[Please don't ask him why he wears it please don't ask him why he wears it please don't ask him why he wears it]

[Admittedly, her knowledge of Palo is pretty slim (at least in comparison to her knowledge of most other things), but some things tend to be fairly universal, and it isn't hard to make educated guesses.]
Has it worked?
no subject
All I know is that when I wear it, it feels like my migraines are more infrequent and less intense, which was the reason Julio Ruiz gave it to me in the first place. [Wait. Shit. He's going to blush a little, because he didn't mean to tell her about his migraines (and his potential nociceptive hallucinations). Goddamn memes.]

[And, well. She can't very well let something like that go, can she? NOT HER CURIOSITY, NO SIR.]
You have migraines? Do you know what causes them?
no subject
I don't, actually. I've had an MRI and an fMRI, and I've had four different opinions on the scans, and all the doctors say that there's nothing physically wrong with me.
They think it's psychosomatic.
[Even when he's compelled to answer her, 'psychosomatic' comes out strangely. Like the word itself is trying to choke him when he says it.]

[It's a statement, not a question. Rest assured.]
I'm not one to put faith in superstition, but that's because too often people let that faith inhibit them, and I refuse to be a prisoner of fear. Belief in something spiritual that benefits you rather than hindering you...that, I can understand.
But you're still afraid, aren't you?
no subject
Because I am afraid. Terrified, actually. [Fucking adflgknaoer goddamn memes fgdgadfaa why can't he stop talking] They've only gotten worse, and nothing--not diet, exercise, or medication--helps. Nothing except a beaded bracelet I can't even admit to depending on out loud. [Can you tell he hates talking about this?]
no subject
Why can't you admit to depending on it? What do you lose by acknowledging it helps?
no subject
I lose the ability to pretend I'm going to be okay.
no subject
Because you need to have an explanation that isn't hallucinations, because the hallucinations themselves will be indicative of something else. And that's what you're really afraid of. It's not about needing a physical method of therapy over a spiritual one. It's that you need what's being treated to be something other than what you're afraid it is.
[She's not going to ask the next logical question that follows from that. She's curious, not cruel, and he's resisting this something fierce already. But that doesn't mean she doesn't have her guesses.]
no subject
Nonetheless, he is forced to give a simple] You're right.
I really, really don't want it to be what I think it is. [He doesn't want to be like his mother.]

He could kiss her anyway. And that sounds like as good a place as any to attempt to divert the subject.]
A philosopher once said, "fear is a good servant but a bad master". There are some things you can't control. Fear is something you can.

ha Reid initiating a kiss that's funnyThank you, Carmen. He will sneak you all the cherries for changing topics.] I can control fear. I mean, I'm used to being scared of things. Working in the BAU, you deal with fear a lot. I know how to function with it.

Then... Yeah, I think that would be good for both of you. She just... It'll take her a while to open up. We lived together for months before she opened up to me.

O-Oh...that makes sense. Thank you.

187 is the highest score one can get on an IQ test, and I got it without trying. I graduated high school when I was twelve, but I probably could have done it much earlier if my school district were willing to let me skip more grades. I read 20,000 words per minute while the average literate adult can only read 300. I have an eidetic memory, which despite there being documented instances of extraordinary memory skills, is often considered a myth because it requires that a person be able to recall every detail of any given event, including visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile stimuli, and to recall it so clearly that they can make themselves feel like they are experiencing it all over again.
While I generally don't believe in arbitrary measurements of intellect, all of those facts indicate genius intelligence.
