[If this is someone he's met before, he should recognize him, right? It's confusing that he doesn't, and it leaves him wary.]

..You've been here before. A couple times. People usually don't remember, though.

[This was going to be annoying, especially with Itachi looking the same age as the last time he was here. It had taken a while for him to 'warm up' to Naruto, so to speak.]

Anyway I'm Naruto, Uzumaki Naruto y'know! You an' me were travelling together last time you were here. I'm Sasuke's best friend! he's not here anymore either though.

[Uzumaki. The name calls up the image of the red-haired woman, his mother's friend. Wasn't she the Hokage's wife? The memories are some years ago, and rarely if ever spoken of since, but he's Uchiha Itachi. His memory is good.

That doesn't mean he trusts this Naruto, though. It isn't enough to go on.]

You look a little old to be Sasuke's friend. [Sasuke's seven. How is he best friends with someone older than Itachi?]

[it may confuse most, but Naruto's been through this before. He already knows what Itachi must be thinking.]

Sasuke isn't the same Sasuke you're thinking of. This place screws with time, like- my parents? They were here until a couple months ago, even though they died when I was born.

The Sasuke I know, he's seventeen already.

[It sounds crazy, but Itachi just lets that sink in. Everything sounds crazy here. He's not about to balk at this newest bit of madness.]

Seventeen? [Older than him. It's so strange to think of. But it means Sasuke has survived, at least -- that the promises made to him were kept.]
