Clover Field | 999
So anyone passing through the middle of the cave is likely to find Clover, sitting with her back against a rock and grumbling. In one hand she has a flashlight pointed at the map she has propped up against her backpack in front of her. In the other, she has a granola bar, and she keeps taking big bites of it and chewing on it with fierce, angry conviction, like she's taking out her frustration on the snack. Yeah, that'll help; good job, Clover.
Her Snubbull is curled up into a ball next to her, whining. The sound of her whining echoing against the cave only distresses her further, so she whines some more.]
Sshhh, Lady, shhhhh. Yeah, I know, being lost sucks. Ugh, this thing is useless! [Spoilers: the map is sideways and also of Mt. Mortar.]
Re: Clover Field | 999
[Her eyes narrow, and her face slackens into a grandmotherly smile.]
Well, dearie.
[She drops to one knee, elbowing Gastly aside, and peers at the map.]
Let's see if we can give you a little help with that, mm?
no subject
Oh, sure... [She pulls Lady, whose attempt to scowl at the Gastly is ruined by the way she shakes, into her lap, then passes the woman her map. With the flashlight turned towards her, Clover can see how disheveled she is. It makes her frown, concerned.] Did you get lost, too?
no subject
Oh, I'm never lost, child.
[Her lips twitch. Gastly giggles, fangs a-glinting, and Dahlia hisses at him; he falls silent, pulsating.]
I never get lost. It's everything around me that's lost.
[In the middle distance something cries out--a bat, Dahlia thinks, though there's something rusty and wet in it. She allows herself one shiver before tracing her finger along the map. Her eyes widen. Her lips purse. And Dahlia smiles.]
no subject
[She starts getting up, just enough to come to a crouch, and takes her backpack strap in the hand that doesn't unsteadily shine her flashlight at the map. Lady balances precariously against her legs, burying her face against Clover's stomach when all the unfriendly noises become too frightening.] Can you tell where we are?
no subject
[Dahlia traces with a painted and broken fingernail the edge of the map. Her lips twitch.] I'd ask for a refund. See this? Yes? Whatever reprobate sold this--
["Reprobate" had another meaning for her once--but that was long ago and far away.]
It's Mount Mortar.
[Wherever that might be, she mentally adds.]
You've got to read these things closely, my girl. Absentmindness helps nobody.
no subject
[Lady yelps when Clover jolts forward to take another look at the map, and the poor Snubbul goes tumbling right out of her lap. Distracted, Clover takes a moment to find the indicated spot on the paper and she glares at it, her face flushed pink with embarrassment.] Ugh! I can't believe... [And she devolves into muffled grumbling as she hefts her backpack strap over one shoulder and scoops Lady back up into her other arm.]
I swear the label said—ugh! [With a huff, she comes to her feet—and after a moment, holds a hand out to help Dahlia up, too.] At least I haven't got that stupid thing sending me in circles anymore...
